Frequently Asked Questions

Who made this program? A team of medical students from all over the city of Philadelphia have come together in light of the COVID-19 pandemic to build a volunteer tutoring program to serve the community. Please refer to the section “Overview - Mission Statement, Background, Our Partners.”

Who are the tutors? Our tutors are post-secondary students in the Greater Philadelphia Area who are volunteering to tutor and mentor kids free-of-charge. Prior to beginning tutoring sessions, they are required to get necessary background checks and clearances done that are required by the school district.

How will my child get in contact with the tutor? Our program is primarily run through an online medium called Google Classroom. Your child may already be familiar with this as this has been used by school teachers to facilitate their online curriculum. For instructions on how to access this interface, please visit Google Hangouts and check out our “Resources” section for links to helpful video tutorials.

How will my child be matched with a tutor? Based on what subjects your child needs assistance with, we match them to a tutor who is proficient in the subject matter and comfortable teaching it.
-
How many subjects can my child get help with? You can find a tutor for any subject your child needs help with and there is no limit.
-
How often does tutoring take place? Tutoring can occur as many times a week as you want for your child. Since tutoring takes place virtually, there is flexibility in scheduling with RISE tutors.

Do the tutors have background checks and training prior to working with my student? Yes! All tutors are required to have a Child Abuse Clearance, PA Criminal Check, and FBI Fingerprinting priot to tutoring. Tutors will also have training before working with your student.
